Risk management with ROAM

Risk management with ROAM

Experiment risk management with ROAM model

Description

This activity is about finding the appropriate risk management approaches. Participants learn how to manage risks in a project with the ROAM model. There are four approaches: Resolved, Owned, Accepted, Mitigated (ROAM).

The different stages of the activity bring clarity step by step. They explore different perspectives and learn to accommodate them in their daily activities.

Flow

Introduction

  • Introduce the activity to the participants: goal and instructions for each stage of the activity.
  • Each team will name a team coordinator. These persons will facilitate the discussion in the breakout room. Then they’ll present the outcome to the other teams. They will have handy the ideas written within the predefined template.
  • Provide the activity link to each team.

Work

  • Members of each team choose a certain project from their professional activity, or they are offered a study case by the trainer. Then they discuss it during the 3 stages of the activity.
  • Participants brainstorm and list the risks of the project. They write them down on the sticky notes posted on the flipchart (page 1).
  • (Variation) Participants assess the level of probability and impact of each risk. Then they state their perspective by using the labels predefined in Colltrain.
  • The next stage of this activity invites participants to map the risks on the four-area model. Here, ROAM stands for Resolved, Owned, Accepted, Mitigated. This time-boxed stage may be challenging since participants have to accommodate different perspectives. Participants achieve clarity on the project’s risks. They classify the risks through agreement (recommended). Now, they are ready to develop risk response strategies.

Debrief (suggested)

  • The team coordinator from each team will present the outcome to the other teams.
  • The facilitator may ask the following questions:
    • What did you discover during this activity?
    • Was there anything surprising?
    • What challenges did you face during this activity? How did you overcome them?
    • How did you manage to accommodate different perspectives?
    • How will these findings influence you in your daily activity?
    • How likely are you to use the ROAM model when dealing with projects?

Variations

Participants assess the level of probability and impact of risks, using labels (low-medium-high). This way, they understand the risk’s importance and decide further the approach.
